First Furniture

As you all know, the cowboy is an avid Craigslist fan—buying and selling.  Well, in the Phoenix area it’s a little different than in Montana—a state with a population less than the city of Phoenix!  Michael has been cruising the West Valley and North Phoenix sections of Craigslist for all sorts of things—furniture for one thing—and finds probably 600!!! new listings per day.  It’s a little like looking for a needle in a haystack but he found the needle over the weekend--DSCN1778It’s perfect, almost new, perfect colors (photo doesn’t do it justice) and comfortable—of course we had to travel some distance to retrieve this perfect chair—not much different than when we are in Montana.  Smile

Sunday we spent the day recuperating from the demolition/restoration project.  Michael puttered a little, removing the rest of that ugly little porch, I baked brownies and made chicken fajitas for lunch.  We had happy hour with Larry and Geri—their new home has the best covered deck!

Here’s the view from our new window in the house--

I want to take a little poll—if you live in a “stick” house are your kitchen cabinets painted (with color)or natural wood with a clear finish or stained?  My upper kitchen cabinets in Montana are stained a deep green—you can still see the wood grain, the lower cabinets are natural wood with a dark stain—and again, you can still see the wood grain.

  1. Nice chair and nice photos. You guys are quickly making progress.

Painted cabinets or wood grain both appeal to me...but the trend is towards painting older cabinets white.

  2. I like the chair. The cowboy did good. Ours are painted. Just had them repainted last month, same color, red.

  3. Beautiful chair, gorgeous view. Your cowboy did good on both counts.

My kitchen cabinets had dark walnut stain that the wood barely showed through (mid 70s style). A few years ago I completely redid the room....painted the cabinets and trim white, the walls a terracotta color, new flooring in a much lighter pattern. The room is so much lighter & brighter now.

  4. My oak cabinets are stained and only have a coat of Linseed oil on them which has lasted for years. Only thing I would need to do is freshen them up with another coat of linseed oil if I wanted to, but so far they don't need it. I think I built them in 1987. No paint and no clear coating that can go bad.

  5. I have the same type oak cabinets as Bob. About the only thing wrong with them is that the sun coming through the windows have turned two small corner cabinets a lighter color...maybe more yellow. It isn't noticeable until you study it, but if you are considering stain or Linseed oil, you might ask the painter how oak cabinets endure in sunny areas. Otherwise, I truly enjoy our "natural" oak cabinets.

    1. I've got other cabinets done with linseed oil too. All you have to do to renew it is add another coat of linseed oil, very easy compared to every other way to do it.

  9. I went retro - painted the accent wall vivid aqua with white trim, painted cabinets white high gloss enamel, cabinet knobs vintage crystal, and sink window curtain is black and white zebra - I like fun and bright designs - and I love the view from your new windows. The craigslist chair is a great find - Unique and perfect southwest taste and colors - definitely worth driving for !!

  10. Currently my kitchen is under "reconsideration" of a make over. I bought the house end of April and b/c of the beautiful oak woodwork in the entire house I want to keep the natural oak cabinets in the kitchen. Will probably add an accent wall of a bright color or bright tile between cabinets and counter top.

LOVE the views from your new windows !

  11. My house was built in the late 60's. Painted cabinets. In 2000 I redid my kitchen and went to Home Depot. New appliances and hickory cabinets. At night with lights on they look like honey!! Look great! Great chair and view. I live in Scottsdale --your moon looks like mine.

  15. Who would ever look at kitchen cabinets with that view?! But my little southwest house had painted cabinets and I loved them. Maybe one of the muted colors of your new dishes would be nice - better than white I think. Love the chair and ottoman - what a great find!!!
