Geez I’m Out Of Practice

When traveling was a part of my life I looked on the poor innocent tourists with pity as they tried to figure out the system.  Well, today I was the tourist.  I used to hold elite membership in airline, hotel and rental car loyalty programs—today I was a nobody booked into cattle car status right along with those other tourists!

I arrived at the Billings airport one hour before my scheduled departure time and by the time I checked a bag and got through security I walked right on to the packed airplane which gave new meaning to the word—sardine!!!!  The plane was hot, the flight attendants surly—just a miserable experience—who ever said travel was fun??? Sad smile

In Minneapolis I had a mere 35 minutes to go MILES in the concourse—I landed in the “F” concourse and had to fast walk my way to the end of the “C” concourse.  And again, I walked right onto the packed airplane where my seat mate supposed that as it was a very small jet with very small seats he could take half of my seat as well as his own.  GRRRR!

All was well when I landed and saw the smiling face of my friend Elaine.  We jumped in her rental car and headed to Kelly’s where she had a beautiful cheese tray ready with champagne glasses and chilled Prosseco.  All is right with the world.  We visited for a while, Tom’s (Kelly’s husband) daughter, son-in-law and three children rolled in from Chicago and the party has begun!

After a while Elaine and I decided to head to our hotel making our way through the rain soaked streets of Kansas City—to our wonderful hotel room on the Plaza in downtown Kansas City.  Life is good!

Garden Is Kaput

IMG_4684Does this photograph tell you how cold it was at our house this morning???  Yes, we had below freezing temps—the poor garden is kaput.  We covered the tomatoes and peppers but it must have just been too cold because the vines looked not very alive!  So, this afternoon I pulled up the tomatoes, turned them upside down and hung the plants in the garage—will keep you updated on how that works??  Harvested the onions and put them in the basement to dry:

IMG_4687And picked all the peppers and disposed of those plants, too.

IMG_4686Harvested the rest of the carrots and cut back the raspberries.  All that remains is to harvest the potatoes—Michael’s job.

My suitcase is packed, I am off to Kansas City tomorrow leaving Michael and Emmi home alone.  My dear friend Kelly’s son is getting married Saturday and we are using the occasion to have a gathering of girlfriends, too.  I am so excited!  I just checked in on the Delta website and realized I have just about 30 minutes to change planes in Minneapolis plus I have to change terminals—guess I better wear my running sneakers!

Can I just say how happy I will be when this election is over????  If one more person calls me wanting answers to their survey I may come uncorked.  Michael says to the guy who called yesterday, “when you pay me as much as you are making I will answer your questions.”  The guy replied, “well, I only make about $9/hour.”  Michael said, “I will wait for your check.”  The guy hung up, imagine that!!!  Smile

May We Never Forget

I’m sure almost everyone in the US remembers where they were on September 11, 2001.  I was working for Kimberly-Clark at the time and had flown to Fargo, ND for a gown trial in an operating room there.  I don’t know exactly how many nurses were working for KC at that time but probably six to eight.  There were only two of us out that week, myself and my friend Kelly who was in California.

The operating room had stationed me at a table in the hallway with my gowns so I could convince staff and surgeons to try the new product.  As I sat there I began to hear snippets of conversation, whispered, scared conversation.  No one stopped to tell me what was going on and after a while I became concerned—there was a TV in the staff lounge, I walked to the door just in time to see coverage of the second plane hitting the tower.  I didn’t leave the lounge for a long time—gowns were forgotten.  I went outside to call Michael—we had no TV so he was getting his info from the internet.  I wanted to go home.

In my hotel there were lists at the desk of people going one direction or another and willing to take someone else along.  I had a Hertz rental car—it was an independent franchise and the agent said, “I would love to let  you take the car to Billings but then I would have to fly there to get it.”  He told me the Thrifty counter had two cars just a few minutes before I called.  When I called Thrifty they had one car left and were willing to let me drive it to Billings—I gave them my credit card information and drove out to the airport to make the switch seeing the newly installed concrete barriers in front of the airport.

I drove home, 14 hours—when I rolled into the Billings airport I was stunned to tears.  Our little airport is small, friendly—parking is literally right out the front door.  No more—concrete barriers were in place, armed National Guard soldiers were searching every vehicle which entered the airport driveway and there was no more up front parking.  Those rules have relaxed a little—the parking is back but the concrete barriers remain.

Michael received several calls from friends who knowing I traveled extensively wanted to know my whereabouts.  We had friends working for Northwest—he a pilot, she a flight attendant.  We could not reach them—we later learned they were in Europe and of course could not get back to the US.  One of the other KC nurses was on vacation with her husband in Canada—they stayed a few extra days.

Those were very difficult, trying days post September 11—our world was changed forever, our country is still fighting a war as a result of those terrorist attacks.  May we never forget the men and women who died on September 11, 2001. May we never take that part of our history for granted.

On the home front, a very cool day (high of about 65 degrees) but so very smoky—UGH!

IMG_4682No mountains again.

Emmi had to see the vet this afternoon for her yearly checkup.  She begins to shiver and shake the minute we walk in the door.  Our vet insulted her today—“Emmi, your teeth look great but you need an orthodontist!”  When Jim started to exam her she crawled up my chest and onto my shoulder trying to get away.  Guess she doesn’t like having her temp taken that way!

Where Does Time Go

Michael and I both said this morning, “I sure am glad your birthday weekend is over!!”  All that celebrating was exhausting!!!  But it sure was a lot of fun, too.

My goal today was to get another quilt on the frame—it was late this afternoon before that happened and it’s not totally loaded.  I just couldn’t get my gears going today.  I did some laundry and made bean burritos for lunch.  Emmi required a lot of ball playing too this morning.

Our friend Robyn had heard about the death of my horse Mr. Red.  Saturday night she asked if Michael’s horse needed a companion.  We had both been talking about that very thing—we hated to go off and leave Mr. Roan for the winter with no company.  Robyn had just the horse, he’s slightly lame, not ride-able and guess what his name is—Red.  She rolled up the driveway about 10am with Red in the trailer—a couple squeals later and all seemed to be well.  We’ve gone up and checked on them a few times—the two horses seem to be getting along just fine.IMG_2498

IMG_4664Isn’t that the prettiest sunflower—Nancy grew all the sunflowers in my birthday bouquet.

And that’s about it for our day here in Montana—Michael hauled dirt from our place to Geoff and Nancy’s for most of the day.

I did finally finish the book by Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged.  I don’t think I could have sat down and read the book—a little too deep for my reading enjoyment but I was able to get an audio version from our local library.  The book was very interesting—the parallels between the political climate then and our political climate now were intriguing to say the least!

And Another Birthday Celebration

I am one spoiled birthday girl this year and I am loving it!!!  Jill and Terry took Michael and me to Roscoe, MT and the Grizzly Bar this afternoon for a late lunch, early dinner.  Terry decided to take some back roads—I was sure we needed to be dropping bread crumbs but we came in the back side of the little community of Roscoe—right where we should have been.  The best thing about the Grizzly Bar is the dessert—ice cream rolled in tiny chocolate chips, drizzled with raspberry sauce and whipped cream—to die for!

Emmi stayed with Nat—when we got back Mike’s cousin Shelley stopped by to visit Nat.  She had come down from Kalispell to visit her Mom Helen who is the lady we visited in the nursing home this past week.  It was good to see Shelley—she is an operating room nurse like me.

There sure were a lot of suicidal deer on the road tonight just dying to jump into our convertible with us—YIKES!  On the way home we could see smoke boiling up from the Pine Creek fire over near Livingston.  Our weather forecast is for high winds and single digit humidity tomorrow!

IMG_4661A grainy photo but you get the idea!  Another YIKES!

It has been a fabulous weekend, I am so blessed to have such good friends!!  Thanks to all of you!!

Must Be A Birthday Weekend

Yes, instead of just a birth day, I’m having a birthday weekend!!  About lunchtime we received an email from Nancy saying they would like to meet us at the McLeod bar for a belated birthday dinner—well of course!!  Robyn & Claire joined Nancy, Geoff, Michael and me—we had an absolutely wonderful evening.  And I even received flowers—sunflowers from Nancy’s yard!  Thank you so much—Geoff & Nancy, Robyn & Claire—it was a great evening!!

Nat came for lunch today—I made meatloaf, garlic mashed potatoes from my garden, carrots from my garden with homemade chocolate ice cream for dessert—all delicious.

I had set a goal for today—to finish Mary P’s quilt—success and it is absolutely beautiful!!  I will deliver it this week and then everyone can see photos.

IMG_4632“What am I doing up here??  Stupid little dog comes along and I end up in the tree!”

bear_closeHow would you like to meet up with this guy on the trail????  Look at those claws!!  This photo was in an article on our local news service, KTVQ.  A wildlife guy was flying around Yellowstone Park counting wolves when he saw this grizzly feeding on a buffalo carcass.  The wildlife guy said he was glad his plane got him out of there—the bear looked as if he wouldn’t mind another snack!!  YIKES!

A Very Good Day

Another chilly morning greeted us and we took our walk in jackets!!  The high today was a very pleasant 75 degrees—Sunday we are under another red flag warning with low humidity, high temps and wind—no rain in sight!

The day just seemed to melt away—I spent a lot of time on the phone receiving birthday wishes from family and friends—a great time to talk on the phone!

Michael drove over to the West Boulder and investigated a septic tank job he is doing and while he was gone I made a shrimp/pasta/tomato dish for lunch—my own creation and delicious!

Our plans for the evening with friends fell through due to an illness on their part so Michael and I tried out my birthday present—I’m feeling pretty special this birthday—he ordered me two (because I knew if we only got one there would be a fight over who sat in it) LaFuma zero gravity lounge chairs.

IMG_4627We enjoyed a very nice happy hour on the deck sitting in our new chairs.  It was a wonderful birthday and I am one blessed lady for sure!

Not quite as smoky around here today.  Just a very good day in Montana.
