Lost Photos Found, New MiFi, Black Friday Shopping and a Blizzard

At 9am this morning it was 33 degrees.  By noon it was 16 degrees and it had started to snow.  By 4pm we had ten inches of snow!!!  As I write this blog it is four degrees above zero—time for this group to hit the road I would say!!  The air was just frigid when we went for our walk and the clouds/fog were rolling in over the mountains.

That isn’t rain you see in this video, that’s how hard it was snowing!

Remember I had lost some Thanksgiving photos from my camera card after setting the date and time in the new replacement camera?  Michael found a free software download called Canon Photo Recovery.  I sent Rick an email asking if he was familiar with this software.  He quickly replied saying he had checked it out, the software looked OK and Rick also gave me a link to another recovery program if the Canon software didn’t work. 

The Canon program worked and was very simple to use, I could see my photos but in order to actually get my hands/clicker on the photos I was directed to a page asking for $39!  The photos I lost were good but not $39 worth of good!!  So I tried Rick’s software—PC File Inspector—and instant success, my photos were retrieved—it’s kind of strange that the photos are lurking there in the background of the camera card don’t you think!!

Can you believe we went Black Friday shopping???  Two people who abhor crowds???  Well, it wasn’t by choice let me tell you but the experience wasn’t as traumatic as we expected!  When we went to Billings about a week ago, one of the main reasons was to purchase a mifi device from Verizon.  We had done our research and wanted a Novatel 6620.  The young man, Alex, who helped us had also sold us our iPhone and was very pleasant—but, he sold us the wrong mifi. 

We arrived home late that Friday, had things to do on the weekend and on Monday Michael saw an email from Verizon which said, “let’s get you started with your new Pantech MHS291.”  WHAT??  Michael gets the mifi box out of the bag and sure enough—it’s the wrong one.  So, the store orders us a new one and we had to go back to Billings—Alex took a whole lot of ribbing over this one.

But, it turned out to be a great, great day!  We got the correct mifi device, it works, our friends Jill and Terry just happened to text us saying they were in Billings too—we met for lunch and had an awesome time.  We scooted to Costco where Santa/the cowboy purchased a Christmas present for his wife.  We didn’t have to wait in line to check out at Costco or the Wal Mart in Laurel—amazing!! 

Back to Big Timber we retrieved Emmi and visited with Nat who was very glad he got to babysit the Emmi girl for the day. 

Today we have packed, packed and packed some more.  The heat is on in the motorhome and the cowboy is going to plow snow tomorrow for sure! 

Happy Thanksgiving

Lonn, Katie, Laci and I served up a delicious Thanksgiving meal this afternoon.  We had a very enjoyable morning cooking, laughing, teasing and playing with little Ms. Lora.  We missed the presence of LoraLee immensely. 

This family doesn’t like turkey—so we decided cooking a turkey was not an unbreakable rule—we cooked beef tenderloins and oh, my were they ever delicious.  We cooked one outside on the grill and one in the oven.  Mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, jello salads, lettuce salad, rolls—the list goes on and on!  Chocolate cake and pumpkin pie for dessert—way too much food but oh so good!!  I headed over to Lonn’s earlier in the morning and Michael went to town and retrieved Nat for the celebration.  We were joined by friends of Katie and Michael’s—Becky, David and Phillip plus Trey, a friend of John and Laci’s from the USAF base in Great Falls.

There were seven dogs belonging to various friends and family at Lonn’s and Emmi doesn’t socialize well in groups so she remained at home.  We went for a long walk while waiting for Michael to come home after taking Nat back to town.  Our temps are weird—45 degrees today so much of our snow is gone to be replace by mud!

All the other photos I took today disappeared—my replacement Canon camera kept asking me to reset the date and time so I did—all the photos taken before I performed that little function simply disappeared—dang it!  (sorry John and Laci—the ones I took of you guys were great!)

Tires, Packing, Cooking

Yesterday after lunch we headed into town—the jeep needed new tires before it heads to Arizona!  That’s three sets of new tires we’ve purchased this year, OUCH!!!  We delivered quilts and ran a bunch more errands and spent some time visiting Nat. 

We borrowed Nat’s truck while the jeep was at the tire shop and when it was time for him to leave the Senior Center I drove over to get him.  He was heavily involved in a pinochle card game—I sat behind him and watched through about four hands and never did understand just what the heck they were doing!! 

On our way into town it was raining, coming home snowing.  We woke to about eight inches of the white stuff—it’s gorgeous but couldn’t it have waited until we were gone???  Michael spent a couple hours plowing snow this morning. 

I started cooking some of the dishes I am taking over to Lonn’s tomorrow, gave Emmi a bath, worked on some Christmas presents and started packing.  Our temperatures are going to take a dive this weekend so we aren’t loading anything freezable into the rig just yet—we are both ready to head south to say the least! 

The little Canon SX700 I purchased for our Alaska trip was having issues—if you turned the camera to take a vertical shot the LCD screen would go black.  Canon has a wonderful service department—complete the online form and send the camera back.   Repairs are completed and the camera or a replacement is returned to you within seven days of when Canon receives the camera.  All was well until Fed Ex forgot where we live—they do this periodically here in Montana—delivering my camera to our neighbors who are not in residence at the time!!!  We always know when FedEx tracking states “delivered” and we don’t have the item—go down to Joe and Tammy’s—the package is always on their porch!  We were expecting a couple more packages from Amazon today—when I checked tracking it was marked “delivered.”  Guess we will take a trip down the hill to Joe and Tammy’s again!

Entertaining The Dog

We seem to do that a lot!  Walk the dog, play ball with the dog, pull on the duck for the dog—don’t get me wrong, I can’t imagine life without Ms. Emmi but she does seem to require a lot of our attention.  So, the cowboy decided to rig her highness a bungee ball—it didn’t take Emmi long to figure out how to catch that ball!

When Emmi was just a tiny puppy we met our friends Jim and Ellie plus Mark and Dortha at Glacier National Park here in Montana.  Ellie and Dortha gifted Emmi with a little bling collar and a stuffed duck.  That was the first of many ducks purchased for Emmi—over five years later it is still Emmi’s favorite toy.  On Friday while in Billings I purchased yet another duck at Wal Mart intending to make it Emmi’s Christmas present.  Emmi was with us and saw the duck sticking out of a bag Michael placed in the car.  Once home he put that bag downstairs as it was all stuff which needed to go to the motorhome.  Emmi sat and stared at the bag so he moved the bag to our pantry/storage room.  The next morning on her way downstairs and outside to do her business Emmi pushed the door of the pantry open and sat staring up at the bag containing the duck.  The cowboy caved and gave her the duck!

OK, enough about our favored child!  Michael spent the day puttering, getting stuff ready for our departure, we’ve turned the heat on in the motorhome so we can start loading stuff which would be in danger of freezing otherwise.  I spent the day doing routine chores—laundry, bathroom cleaning—and quilting.  I loaded and finished a quilt for myself—one I made at quilt retreat and I used minky as the backing.  Photo to come—the quilt is still on the zippers, I had stood at the machine too long today making my back and shoulders ache.

And that’s about it for our day.

I Did It, A Recipe And An Adorable Baby

In the blog for Saturday, November 15 I wrote, “With our departure date approaching rapidly I’ve set myself a goal of finishing all my customer quilts this coming week.”  And I did it!!!  Actually one day late but who is counting—I took the last customer quilt off the frame this afternoon and loaded the backing for one of my own quilts!!! 

Whew what a nasty day weather wise—yesterday it rained and spit ice pellets, today there was a cold, bitter wind howling.  Just nasty!!  In spite of the weather, Michael loaded the ATV’s into the cargo trailer. 

At Costco the other day I bought a set of fleece sheets for the motorhome—put those on the bed today and I just may have to buy a set for the house they felt so good! 

Soup was on the menu for lunch—it was just one of those kind of days.  This is a recipe I adapted from one I saw in Real Simple Magazine.  That recipe called for shrimp but as I didn’t have any the soup became vegetarian except for the bacon. The cowboy told me I could fix this soup anytime—it was that good!

Smoky Corn and Potato Chowder

What it took for 2:

* 2 slices bacon, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
* 1/2 medium yellow onion, diced
* 2 cloves garlic, minced
*2 yukon gold potatoes peeled and cubed

* 1 Tbs. smoked paprika
* 1 pinch crushed red pepper
* 3 cups frozen corn
* 2 cups chicken stock
* 1/2 cup half and half (or cream)
* coarse salt and freshly ground pepper

Heat a medium-sized pot over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook until crispy. Remove bacon from the pan and set aside on a paper towel to drain. Drain all but 1Tbs. bacon fat, if you have that much in the pot.

Add the onions to the pot and sauté 5 minutes. Add the garlic, paprika, crushed red pepper and a pinch of salt and pepper. Sauté another minute.

Add the corn and potato cubes to the pot and toss to combine.

Add the stock and half & half to the pot. Stir to combine. Keep on a low simmer for 15 minutes. Taste it. Need a little salt and pepper? Add a pinch or two.

If you have an immersion blender, place it in the pot and pulse it a few times until about half of the soup becomes creamy, still leaving whole kernels and potato cubes as well. If you don’t have an immersion blender, ladle about a cup and a half of the soup into a blender and pulse until creamy. Pour back into the pot and stir to combine; add the bacon stirring to combine.

Trip To Billings and Quilts

One last trip to Billings, probably.  Michael had an appointment with the dermatologist and now he looks as if he has chicken pox again.  The dermatologist wrote him two prescriptions, one for a persistent eczema type rash on his hand and one other prescription for another issue.  I also refilled a prescription for the one medication he takes on a daily basis—$50 for a three month supply.  Well, when I went to the Costco counter the young woman helping me said, “do you know how much these medications cost??”  I said, “no, enlighten me!”   Are you sitting down???  The rash cream—$384 for a small tube, the other prescription which was for a solution—$976!!!!!!!  Needless to say I got his regular meds and left the other two behind—good grief!!  The pharmacy person said they had received many prescriptions for the solution but NO ONE had paid the price!!

Costco was an absolute zoo—I don’t think we have ever seen that kind of line up at the check out counters—you would have thought it was the day before Thanksgiving instead of the Friday before!!  We filled our cart with too much stuff as usual but did manage to get a couple Christmas presents. 

I enjoyed my last good haircut until I return in the spring—I adore my hairdresser and she has never steered me wrong, always on time, pleasant, cheerful.  A young woman who is married to a Billings’ police officer and they have two small children. 

We stopped by the Verizon store and purchased a JetPack device—we’ve always used an aircard with Millenicom but now that Millenicom is no more we had to head in another direction.  We also purchased a Wilson Sleek booster—had to send Nina a quick email to find out if we were getting the correct booster—yep, we did.

Lunch at CJ’s completed our day and we were heading out of Billings and all the hub-bub by 3pm.  The whole state of Montana contains less than one million people but I swear there were 999,000 in Billings today—busy!!

Yesterday after yoga I had lunch with Jeane and delivered her quilts—she loved them.  Here is a photo of the sweetest little quilt called Warm Winter Blessings—I have the pattern and it’s on my list! Paulette over in blogland recently scored a reduced price kit to make this little jewel.

Happy Birthday Mom

I consider myself very lucky at the age of almost 60 to still have my Mother living and in decently good health!  This last summer after her accident was a tough one but Mom is also tough and she has bounced back from her total shoulder replacement with flying colors.  The rest of her injuries have also healed and we are looking forward to spending Christmas with Mom and the rest of the family.  Happy Birthday Mom!!

Wow, this afternoon I loaded the last of my customer quilts!!  The gigantic one for Jane is finished as of early afternoon—Jane and I decided to use a pantograph (a quilting pattern I can trace with a laser light) and the quilt turned out beautifully!!   Who knows, I just might get to quilt some of my own stuff now that I’m almost finished with customer quilts!

Michael spent some time working in the cargo trailer today, he installed an inverter and did some more puttering.  Sarge and Sarah came over this afternoon to check out our truck camper—they have toyed with the idea of purchasing one and wanted to see just exactly how small these things really are.  Sarah is a retired veterinarian and gave me some good advice about the lesions Emmi has on her back—I thought they were “hot spots” but in this cold weather my diagnosis seemed kind of unlikely!  Sarah thinks the lesions are probably infected hair follicles and recommended a different shampoo.

SUCCESS, Quilts and Warmer Temps

We are having a heat wave—our temperature today was over freezing—first time in over a week!!  Of course we had to have some wind to cause the rise in temps!

Remember the blog I wrote about being scammed by someone claiming to represent Mother Earth News?  I was successful in obtaining a refund for one of the checks I wrote these idiots but had not ever received the second check.  I got the “the check was written on Sept. 29 and it takes 4-6 weeks for you to get it” routine—really, really, the USPS may be slow but they aren’t that slow!  So I involved the Oregon Department of Justice again where this deadbeat company does business.  An employee of the the Dept. of Justice got a touch cranky with these nuts and look what I got today:

I finished a quilt yesterday evening and its owner came by to retrieve the quilt which is a gift for an expected great-grandchild.

I’ve also had some company in the quilt studio.  Several of the ladies in our yoga group want to make a Christmas tree rag quilt and with Shirley’s help, we are getting it done.  Max and Nancy came yesterday to start cutting squares—we had a very enjoyable afternoon.  Shirley kept them on the straight and narrow while I used the longarm to finish her quilt. 

I loaded a quilt for my friend Jane this morning and finished it this afternoon while Max cut some more squares.  Now I have a HUGE one to do for Ms. Jane—it measures 97x97 inches!!  I’ve been having a hard time with my longarm—it’s been stiffer and stiffer to move.  My mechanic, aka the cowboy, took a look at the machine yesterday and thought the acrylic ruler base was the culprit.  It did not fit my machine correctly causing it to put too much upward pressure against the quilt top and leveler bar.  I do a lot of quilting with rulers and the base is necessary for resting/guiding the ruler as I move the machine.   So, he created me a new one!!!  I am constantly amazed at the man’s handiness!!  Quilting this afternoon was much easier on my arms and shoulders as I wasn’t having to force the machines’ movement.

Michael retrieved the cargo trailer today and began the loading process.  He even hauled some stuff out to the motorhome for me, too!!  Granddaughters and I have Thanksgiving plans in place—life is good!

Coming and Going

It seems as if I haven’t written a blog in a long time but I only skipped two days.  Our days have been busy—Thursday it was yoga in town and after yoga some of the yoga ladies and I went to the quilt shop in town to chose fabrics for making a “rag” quilt.  After our shopping Nancy, Max and I enjoyed lunch at the Timber Bar.

It is still bitterly cold—since Monday we have had two days with temps in the teens, the rest of the days have been single digits with below zero temps each night!  It’s rare we have this long a stretch with temps this cold—it’s making us long for our departure date!

The cowboy has a new toy—a ten feet wide snowplow blade.  He built a bracket to attach the blade to the skidsteer.  He can make one pass down our driveway now and it is plowed.  He was out there today plowing all the new snow which accumulated yesterday and last night.

 

I’ve been quilting like a mad woman and have finished three quilts for customers.  I loaded another one this afternoon and did some of the stitching in the ditch.  With our departure date approaching rapidly I’ve set myself a goal of finishing all my customer quilts this coming week. 

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Big Timber has a yearly fundraising event, an Italian dinner.  We’ve never gone but this year I decided it would be fun and it was.  The food was outstanding—something you would be served in a fancy Italian restaurant.  The wines were good and the dessert was to die for!  I borrowed these photos from our friend Gladys’ Facebook page:

The decorations were perfect too—a very enjoyable evening—that’s the dessert in the green cup—some kind of light, lemon confection!

Life is good.

And It’s Still Cold

Oh, my is it ever cold, our high temperature was eight degrees and when we woke this morning it was 11 degrees below zero—too cold to take a walk—we tried but Emmi just got too cold!

I spent some time working on a quilt, almost finished, just a little bit more to do.  This afternoon we headed into town driving the car with its new studded snow tires—worked very well I must say—the car is the rear wheel drive Cadillac we bought while living down in Texas.  Rear wheel drive cars will NOT go anywhere on ice and snow as we found out last year.  So, new tires were in order, now we can drive my comfortable car!

Today was the day for removing Nat’s stitches—I don’t think I tortured him too much—at least he didn’t groan and moan!  His incision from the MOHS procedure looks great.  We spent some time visiting with Nat and ran a few errands. 

Back home I worked on the quilt for a while and Michael watched a DVD detailing how to use his newest venture—a windshield repair kit.  Is there anything the cowboy won’t try????

Winter Came In Like A Lion

A very cold lion that is!!  Last night when we came home from Livingston after having gone out to eat with friends it was about 50 degrees with rain.  We woke to 12 degrees this morning and a touch of snow.  I think our high temperature today was about 20 degrees!  Tonight’s temp is to be below zero.  Michael thought our motorhome looked as if it were crying—“why didn’t you take me south sooner??”

We bundled up and took a walk this morning then each started on projects—I am working on a precious quilt for my friend Jeane—Warm Winter’s Blessings it is called:

I borrowed this photo from Paulette’s blog—she scored a kit on sale!! for making this sweet little quilt!  The fabrics are adorable and Jeane has done such a good job with the needlework—once it’s quilted and Jeane has seen it I will post photos—that is IF the quilt ever gets back to Jeane, do you think she would buy, “I’m just not quite finished with the quilting,” for a couple years???

The cowboy is building a steel plate for attaching a snow plow to our skidsteer—should make plowing snow a bunch easier.

Five Generations

Friday Michael spent the day working on the motorhome dash heater/air conditioner controls—when I went out to see how the project was going he had the entire dash exposed—YIKES!  But the handy guy came through again and we now have levers which work!

Laci and little Lora Elizabeth came to visit for the weekend and last night we all gathered at Nat’s in town for dinner catered by me and to take some five generation photos.  It isn’t often families have five generations alive at one time.  This is the second time in my families we’ve had five generations living.  I was fortunate to have my paternal grandparents alive into my adulthood. My maternal grandmother was 93 years old when she died and was still aware and cognizant of her surroundings and people.  If I remember correctly she died in 2003.  While Grandma was still alive, my niece Niki, Grandma’s great-grandchild had a daughter, Elizabeth—with our Mom and Niki’s mom alive--five generations. 

 

Lora Elizabeth wasn’t a very happy child yesterday but at least she made it through the photos before having a melt down. 

I finished a quilt for my friend Jeane today and Michael hauled firewood—we may need a lot of firewood—every time I look at the weather report our high temp for Tuesday goes down a few degrees, I think it’s now at about 4 degrees—for a HIGH!!!  That Pacific storm which knocked out Rick and Paulette’s power is a wicked one I think!!

Tonight we drove over to Livingston and had a delicious meal with Sarge and Sarah at the Rib and Chop House.  It’s been a while since we’ve seen them and it was fun to catch up.  Sarah became a first time grandmother in September. 

Yoga And The Motorhome Takes A Trip

As Michael and the motorhome were starting out this morning, the cowboy said, “wouldn’t it be great to be leaving right now?”  Yes, it would—dry roads, moderate temps—we could have even put water in the rig!!  But we aren’t ready, we want to spend Thanksgiving here at home.  It won’t be long, we can be a little patient!

In our last trip out with the motorhome we got a big rock chip in the windshield which decided to become a big crack right across Michael’s line of vision.  Amazingly enough there is a glass repair shop capable of handling that big a windshield located right here in our little town of Big Timber, MT!  So, the big ole motorhome rolled down the driveway and was back in its own driveway mid-afternoon with a shiny new windshield on the driver side.

We have been so fortunate here in our little neighborhood to have a wealth of yoga instructors.  Now remember, we live 22 miles from anything—no grocery store, no gas station, nothing except the post office, a one room school house (still in operation) and a bar.  But we have yoga teachers!  

Julia, our dear present instructor along with her husband Rich recently purchased a beautiful new to them home north of Big Timber on property along the Yellowstone River.  While we were sad to have them leave our neighborhood, we were also so happy for them—their home near us was tiny, very tiny and they have two teenage sons!! 

So, one day a week Julia drives up the Boulder and we have yoga at Nancy’s.  The other yoga day we students drive to Big Timber and have yoga in Julia’s beautiful new home with its to die for mountain views.

While in town for yoga I made a stop at Nat’s to change his dressings and give him an iPad lesson.  Nat had three MOHS procedures on Monday—I think he is soon going to earn the prize for the most MOHS procedures ever done on a human!!  He is LOVING the iPad and is really enjoying the Kindle app plus he is figuring out lots of other internet stuff.  We are so glad he has decided to embrace the computer age at his ripe old age of 92!!

I also enjoyed lunch with my friend Jill—we had a great time catching up on all the news and missed having our friend Jeane join us, she had a commitment in Bozeman.

On the way up the Boulder I will frequently call Michael and say, “I’m on my way home, do you need anything?”—once again, remember it is 22 miles to “anything!”  Today I did this, he said no and I continued on toward home—when I reached our driveway I remembered Joe and Tammy were here for the weekend at our former home—figuring Joe would be out fishing I stopped in to see Tammy.  We were chatting away when I saw Michael’s pickup coming down the driveway and said to Tammy—“Oh, no!!  he thinks I’ve had car trouble.”  Yep, the cowboy was coming to look for me—I had had time to get home but seeing my car at Tammy’s he knew I was safe.  Tammy said, “he really does that, wow, I’m impressed.”  Yes, my cowboy cares greatly for me and I am truly blessed to have him!

Tin Tee Pee and Motorhome Remodel

Karen from Log Cabin Quilter left a comment the other day stating she had made the little Winter Solstice quilt plus she also stated, “your blog name is intriguing.”  I thought an explanation might be in order.  In 2008 when I started this blog with the help of my friend Ellie, the cowboy and I struggled with names.  I grew up in a camping family—my Mom and Dad had a RV, my then husband and I had a tent.  Michael grew up in an outfitting family—they used horses to pack their gear into the mountains near Yellowstone Park and slept in wall tents. 

As we were nearing retirement age in 2003 and were participating in a shooting sport I would suggest getting a RV so we could travel to warmer climates in the winter and shoot.  The cowboy would say, “I’m not living in a *&^% tin tee pee.”  We live in a log cabin on acreage in the mountains of Montana—thus TinTeePeeLogCabin became the name of our blog.  Needless to say, the cowboy does now spend a fair amount of time living in a tin tee pee.

We’ve had several “tin tee pees”—our friends Angie and Ralph frequently say, “you guys change RV’s more often than most people change their underwear!” But I think we’ve finally settled on a rig we truly love—we’ve had the 1995 Country Coach for 4 years now. 

The motorhome has no slides and we love it that way—we have no slide issues such as leaks and we don’t have to deal with flapping slide awnings.  With that said, we also don’t live in our motorhome full time and if we did I might want slides. 

When we bought it this is how it looked:

Wall to wall furniture! 

The TV was above the driver’s seat and you would sit in those two swivel recliners to watch TV.  We took the old TV and the recliners out.  We also removed that gorgeous green/turquoise couch and replaced it with a reclining love seat.  Now how do we watch TV—we aren’t TV watchers—we have no TV in our home, none, zip, nada.  When in the motorhome we will occasionally watch a movie or pick up a local TV station. 

While I was traveling the cowboy was remodeling.  We’ve had a hard to use situation—the TV rode in one of the upper cabinets and when we wanted to watch TV we took it down and sat the TV on that little table between the recliners in the above photo—wires hanging everywhere—not very aesthetically pleasing!  Plus that dumb little cabinet/table stuck too far out into the room since we removed the recliners.  That lamp you see in the photo was glued to the table—that took some doing to remove!!

I sure am glad I have a handy husband!  He removed the little cabinet, split it in half and designed this one using the materials from the old cabinet.  It looks GREAT and is now out of the way.  The TV and DVD player ride inside the cabinet!!
