Learning A New Skill

Michael and I both were complaining about the chill in the motorhome this morning that is until we fired up the laptops and discovered it was 12 degrees at home in Montana.  OK, so we won’t complaining about our 44 degrees.

Well I sort of proved you can teach an old dog new tricks—I spent most of the day learning to knit socks from this sweet lady, Mariam.  IMG_2190

I have knitted in the past, a continuous scarf I never finished and long, long ago in another life I knitted a sweater from ribbon.  Do I remember anything, nope!  So we started from scratch with Mariam teaching me to cast on and by the end of the day this is what I have, the beginnings of a pair of socks:IMG_2191I think I can do this, I think I can do this!

Michael held down the fort at home and baby sat the dog.  When I pulled up at the office a lady was getting into her Volkswagen.  She asked me if I was “Emmi’s Mom?”  Well she met Michael and Emmi out on one of the trails today.  She is Winston’s Mom—an adorable little Yorkie.  I can remember Winston’s name but for the life of me I can’t remember her name.  I’m bad about that—dog names I can remember, people not so much.  Not sure what that says about me!

A good day in northern Florida.

  1. Janna, you can learn all the new stuff you want but please don't get Gina into any new hobbies. She doesn't have any time left for me now. I'm just kidding. The sock is looking good. I just cannot say that it looks like a sock yet but I know you it will very soon. We miss y'all. Love and Hugs,

  2. Hi Janna...sounds like you like the area! The stained glass studio intrigues me I would love to learn about it. If you're staying awhile longer maybe we can check it out together? We'll be back Thursday night!

  5. Great Janna,
Now you teach all of us how to do it. Glad to see you are having a great winter. It really has not been that bad here.

See you in a couple of months.

  6. Janna, I feel like a stalker, I posted the other day and now here I am again. But, I too have taken up knitting and sometimes feel so confused with some of the different terms. I don't know if you use an iPhone but I have a wonderful app for my phone called KnittingHelp. You also can go to their website www.KnittingHelp.com and view video's about just about anything. It has been very helpful when, like you, I decided to try socks. The different steps are broken down and very clearly shown on video when I get into a term or process I am unsure of. I also have found many helpful video's on YouTube that break the steps down.

I'm not trying to imply that you are unable to read/follow directions but I have found these things to be helpful and was able to keep going with this added help between making a trip to the Yarn Shop.

    Happy Knitting!!

  9. Your sock is looking good!!!
Someday we can sit together in our lawn chairs and knit side by side----

Of course, I do mine opposite of yours. I like toe-up knitting. That way if I run short on yarn, I can even out between the two sock tops till they are even. I keep two sets of needles going so I can knit both toes, then both feet, then both heels, then both legs, then finish both off at the same time.

That way I never end up with the dreaded "S.S.S." !!!! (Single Sock Syndrome) hahahahahahha
